Progress on the contemplative path relies heavily on the discernment of spirits (discretio spirituum), the ability to determine the demonic or angelic origin of forces acting on the human will.
Yet theology tends to lose sight of the invisible world that links God to each and every one of us. The powers that inhabit it are often reduced to aspects of human psychology. Yet the Desert Fathers attributed to them an existence of their own, and the ability to influence our thoughts to bring us closer to or further from God. But what exactly is this? What is the nature of angels and demons? Why is it important to take them into account in our spiritual journey? |
Gérard SIEGWALT is a former professor of systematic theology at the University of Strasbourg's Faculty of Protestant Theology. He is the author, in particular, of Dogmatique pour la catholicité évangélique, in 5 volumes of 2 volumes each, and 5 volumes of Ecrits théologiques (1. Le défi interreligieux, 2. Le défi monothéiste, 3. Le défi scientifique, 3. Le défi ecclésial, 5. Le défi humain). One of his latest publications: La réinvention du nom de Dieu. Where has God gone?
