In the history of Christianity, mysticism has often been suspected of deviating from the right doctrine, going so far as to oppose God's revelation, which is supposed to burst into our world from outside, on the one hand, and mysticism, which is the intimate spiritual experience of God, on the other.
The Apostle Paul has again and again been quoted in support of the claim that God intervenes only from the outside, and that salvation - which he develops by speaking of the sinner's justification by grace, which is received in faith - is of the order of a promise to be accepted rather than an experience to be had. And here, too, we have to acknowledge the reality of a Pauline mysticism: "With Christ, I am one crucified; I live, but it is not I, but Christ who lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). Christ: not just for us, but in us, and we in Christ! In essence, I will develop this "being in Christ" as a baptismal becoming: "We have been buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:4). |
In conclusion, I'd like to say that in Paul there are two affirmations: that of Christ in us and that of Christ for us, confirming both the reality of Pauline mysticism and Paul's irreducibility as a mystical Paul.
